Oral Sedation

What SEDATION options do we offer to help relax our younger patients for Dental treatment?

Most Important:

  • We do NO GENERAL ANESTHESIA
  • WE do "LIGHT ORAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION" or more like "CONSCIOUS RELAXATION"
  • "WE ARE STRONGLY AGAINST MIXING ORAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION MEDICATIONS AND OPPOSE A LOT OF MEDICINE THAT PUTS PATIENTS IN MUCH DEEPER SEDATION, WE JUST WANT OUR PATIENTS TO BE A LITTLE RELAX AND THEN IT'S ALL ABOUT HOW WE COMMUNICATE WITH OUR PATIENTS TO MAKE THEM COMFORTABLE TO GET THEIR TREATMENT DONE."
Oral Sedation

WE OFFER 3 OPTIONS TO OUR DENTAL TREATMENT PATIENTS

  1. Oral conscious Sedation with Nitrous Oxide plus local anesthetic
  2. Nitrous Oxide plus local anesthetic
  3. Local Anesthetic only

ORAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION

Our goals for Oral Conscious sedation in our young / pediatric patients are to guard the patient’s safety and welfare,  to minimize physical discomfort and pain,  to control anxiety, minimize psychological trauma,  to modify behavior and/or movement so as to allow the safe completion of the procedure and to be able to return the patient to a state in which their discharge from our dental supervision to the patient's parents is safe.

WE DO NOT MIX ORAL MEDICATIONS AND ONLY GIVE ONE ORAL MEDICINE THAT IS EXTREMELY SAFE AND DOES NOT PUT THE PATIENT TO SLEEP, IT IS FROM THE "BENADRYL"  FAMILY AND ONLY RELAXES THE PATIENT !

NITROUS OXIDE / OXYGEN or "LAUGHING GAS"

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recognizes nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation as a safe and effective technique to reduce anxiety, produce analgesia, and enhance effective communication between a patient and health care provider.

Nitrous oxide is a colorless and virtually odorless gas with a faint, sweet smell. It is an effective analgesic/anxiolytic agent causing central nervous system (CNS) depression and euphoria with little effect on the respiratory system.

Nitrous oxide is absorbed rapidly, allowing for both rapid onset and recovery (two to three minutes). It causes minimal impairment of any reflexes, thus protecting the cough reflex.   It exhibits a superior safety profile with no recorded fatalities or cases of serious morbidity when used within recommended concentrations

The objectives of Oral Conscious Sedation with nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation include:
  • reduce or eliminate anxiety.
  • reduce untoward movement and reaction to dental treatment.
  • enhance communication and patient cooperation.
  • raise the pain reaction threshold.
  • increase tolerance for longer appointments.
  • reduce gagging.
Indications for use of Oral Conscious Sedation With nitrous oxide/oxygen include:
  • a fearful, anxious, or obstreperous patient.
  • certain patients with special health care needs.
  • a patient whose gag reflex interferes with dental care.
  • a patient for whom profound local anesthesia cannot be obtained.
  • a cooperative child undergoing a lengthy dental procedure.
